Hormesis (from Greek hormæin, meaning "to excite") is the term for generally-favorable biological responses to low exposures to stressors. These stressors - such as brief cold showers and baths, saunas, Tabata, GXP and other HIT training - may stimulate the immune system and produce significant health benefits: such as to slow the process of ageing and produce good health and fitness.
